Will it really heat my room?
It'll warm a room, not a house. Of the 30 models here that list their heater size, 30 top out at 1,500 watts, the same as a typical plug-in space heater. That's about 5,100 BTU an hour (1 watt = 3.41 BTU/hr). At full blast, the wood stoves on our list put out 15,906 to 83,857. Think "takes the chill off the living room."
Do I need an electrician?
Usually not. 47 of the 50 models here can plug into a regular outlet. Building one into the wall is a bigger job. If you're running new wiring, hire an electrician.

Can I use an electric fireplace on a no-burn day?
Burn bans cover burning wood, and an electric fireplace doesn't burn anything. Check your area's rules to be sure.
Can I run the flames without the heat?
Many can, which is why people use them in summer too. Check the product page for the model you like.
Is it safe under a TV?
Each maker sets its own spacing rules for TVs and mantels. Follow the installation manual for the exact model.
